Turning the built environment into a carbon sink: Mining the Atmosphere

Peter Richner, Deputy Director EMPA, Switzerland

After emitting CO2 for more than 150 years into the atmosphere it is time to start the cleanup process. CO2 can be captured from the air, the sea or via biomass and will be converted into carbon containing materials. The renewable energy needed for this process will be available within a few decades. The most important market for these materials is the built environment since this sector has the highest materials demand and can therefore serve as a sink for CO2. The final goal is to convert the built environment from a source of CO2 into a sink for CO2.
